Embedding of Ireland’s first Stolpersteine

On 1 June 2022, Holocaust Education Ireland in association with Dublin City Council and the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany, unveiled Ireland’s first Stolpersteine. Stolpersteine creator Gunter Demnig embedded six stones at St. Catherine’s National School, Dublin 8, in memory of six victims of the Holocaust with connections to Ireland.

The Stolpersteine commemorate the lives of Ettie Gluck (née Steinberg), her husband Wojteck, their baby son Leon, as well as three Dublin-born victims; Isaac Shishi, Ephraim Saks, and his sister Jeanne (Lena) Saks.

Speaking at the event, Minister for Children, Equality, Integration, Disability and Youth, Roderic O’Gorman said, “This meaningful memorial will allow these stories to pass through generations and will let us bear witness to their personal experiences of the Holocaust. The Stolpersteine play an important role in helping us to remember the Irish Holocaust victims.”

In attendance were also relatives of the victims. Speaking on behalf of the Steinberg family, Ettie’s nephew Joe Schleider said, “This event carries a vital message. Six human stories, presented in this most poignant and moving of displays, convey the tragedy of millions in a way no book or list of statistics ever could.”
